Ħamrun barber Kusi Dismark, who was detained despite living in Malta for 13 years has left the island voluntarily and is currently en route to his homeland, Ghana.

According to Dismark’s legal representatives, Adrian Sciberras and Gianluca Cappitta, the man is “currently on the way to his homeland, having willingly agreed to repatriation.”

“Following extensive deliberation, Kusi made the decision to voluntarily return to Ghana. This decision was reached after careful consideration and consultation with us, as his lawyers,” Sciberras revealed in a social media statement.

They disclosed that the decision was made following “constructive dialogue” with the Principal Immigration Officer yesterday evening.

The lawyers also stated that, thanks to the Ministry of Home Affairs’ intervention, Dismark will not face a ban on re-entry into Malta.

Earlier this week, Minister Byron Camilleri argued that Dismark had entered Malta irregularly and had chosen not to cooperate with orders from the authorities to depart the country.

Camilleri remained firm in his stance, asserting that “according to the policies I believe in, no one should be given an advantage over others and everyone should be treated equally.”

Dismark’s lawyers highlighted that his case “underscores the presence of numerous stateless individuals on our island, emphasising the need for initiatives aimed at regularising their legal status.”

They further mentioned that while Dismark’s aspirations to live and work in Europe are currently on hold, he finds comfort in the prospect of reuniting with his mother, “whom he has been separated from throughout his time away from Ghana.”

“Kusi is in good spirits and maintains an optimistic outlook for his future in Malta,” the lawyers revealed, affirming their commitment to supporting him in his journey.
