Ħamrun and surrounding towns have become “scary” to walk in, PN MP Paula Mifsud Bonnici warned after a man was charged with raping an elderly man and woman in the streets of the central town.

“What is happening in our country?” Mifsud Bonnici, whose constituency includes Ħamrun, questioned.

“These are shocking news that are unfortunately posing a threat to everyone’s security and dignity, including our elderly. Unless our courts and laws send a strong message, our country will become a jungle where no one will be able to live in peace.”

“Ħamrun and the surrounding localities have become scary to walk in. Is this what we want for our country?”

Yesterday, a 21-year-old man was charged with raping an elderly man and a woman in two separate incidents on the streets of Ħamrun in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The man, Somali national Abdul Yousef Abib, was caught red-handed by police officers getting off one of his victims, who had her underpants pulled down, and running away.

However, he was arrested shortly afterwards and charged with rape, as well as committing non-consensual sexual acts, holding two people against their will, slightly injuring them, and stealing the elderly man’s phone.

He is pleading not guilty and has been remanded in custody.

The case shocked Malta, with many people urging the courts to send a firm message against this kind of behaviour and calling for a stronger police presence in the streets of Ħamrun.

Do you think a stronger police presence is necessary on the streets of Ħamrun?
