Ħamrun Man Suspected Of Distributing ‘Extremist Material’ Found To Have Been Targeting ‘Vulnerable People’ For Recruitment
New evidence surfaced proving that a 32-year-old Ħamrun resident was recruiting “vulnerable people” for terrorist acts.
The evidence came to light from a court hearing today regarding a suspected distribution of “extremist material.”
According to Times of Malta, the suspect was identified as Mouhamadou Rosso, who possessed Italian identification.
Dosso’s Ħamrun residency was raided in the early morning of 31st October around 5am, following weeks of surveillance and intelligence analysis by various units within the Police Force.
During the raid, a range of electronic devices were seized on the suspicion of them containing extremist material.
Following an investigation into Dosso and the devices, extensive records of Facebook Messenger chats revealed instances where Dosso attempted to recruit people for terrorist activities.
Inspector Mohammed Shurrab of the counter-terrorism unit, stated that the individuals targeted were “vulnerable people”, primarily asylum seekers that fled war-torn countries.
Reportedly, one message read, “We are recruiting volunteers to the jihad. If you die in this fight you will go to heaven.”
From the phones seized during the raid, “anti-West” material, such as images with defaced American, French and Israeli flags, were found among photos of terrorist groups, explosives and a terrorist involved in the 9/11 attacks.
The case is set to continue on 18th December, after Magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech stated that enough evidence was presented to issue a bill of indictment against the suspect.
