Ħamrun Resident Decries How Town ‘Went From Shopping Hub To A Scary Place To Visit’
A Ħamrun resident called up a political program this afternoon to decry how h his hometown has evolved from a shopping hub to a place people are “scared to visit”.
“I am proud to be from Ħamrun and I praise Ħamrun Spartans for writing history,” the man said, referring to the team’s European exploits “Thank god we have the team to cheer on because there’s nothing else to be happy about.”
He said the town has gone from being a place people would visit specifically to go shopping and have a coffee and an ice cream afterwards to a place people are scared to visit, all while shops are closing.
PN MP Adrian Delia, who was taking part in the programme, said he empathises with the resident’s concerns as his own mother’s family is from Ħamrun.
“What I heard from the resident is a cry for normality,” Delia said. “People want normality. We’re not asking to be metropolitan or another Singapore, let’s just be Malta.”
“The socialist party [the PL] doesn’t want us to be Malta but the PN does. Let’s not stay adopting other countries’ economic models and experimenting with them.”
“We are proud to be Maltese and we’re proud of our rich culture and civilisation but we must treasure what we have or we risk losing it all, like that dog who went for the second bone and ended up losing the one he already had.”
Earlier today, Prime Minister Robert Abela discussed public concerns on security by pledging to beef up police resources and street presence and regenerate towns like Marsa.
However, he urged politicians not to use these concerns to drive a wedge between Maltese and foreign nationals.
