‘Hawn Għandhom Dawl’: Malta Sweatily Reacts To Power Crisis After Days Of Blackouts

Malta is currently dealing with an escalating energy crisis of persisting power cuts, resulting from the ongoing heatwave.
However, despite the seriousness of the situation, the Maltese spirit of humour and satire remains as citizens take to social media to vent their frustration through memes and jokes.
Here are some of the best reactions which emerged out of the power cuts
1. “Twinkle twinkle dawl tad-dar”
Immanuel Mifsud, highly acclaimed writer and poet in Malta, updated the age-old nursery rhyme “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” to comment on the inconsistent power supply.
2. “U daqqa m’hemmx bizzejjed power stations…”
Andrew Azzopardi, host of one of Malta’s leading radio stations Heart 103 as well as Dean for Faculty of Social Wellbeing, also called out a series of lame excuses given to the Maltese people over a variety of national failures.
3. One guy even went to another country to remind us what society should look like.
A humorous take on the situation came from a Facebook post featuring Luca Lorenzo, Vibe FM radio host, standing in front of the famous Trevi Fountain in Rome.
He held up a sign that reads “Hawn għandhom dawl” which translates to “They have electricity here”…
4. “Solidarjeta mar-residenti tal-Ħames Distrett…”
A post by Franco Debono – lawyer and former PN MP – expressed solidarity with the residents of the fifth district, including Żurrieq and Safi, who are enduring blackouts and heat.
Debono ended his post by sarcastically thanking “Humpty” – his personal nickname for Finance Minister Clyde Caruana – for the overpopulation that has burdened the country.
While these posts and memes may not solve the power crisis, they surely reflect the enduring Maltese spirit of resilience and humour, which remains unshaken even in the face of adversity.
Remember, laughter is the best form of therapy. But in the meantime, let’s hope the power supply stabilises soon!
