‘He Played His Cards Perfectly’: Jason Micallef Praises Grech For ‘Calling Metsola’s Bluff’

PL executive member Jason Micallef has praised outgoing PN leader Bernard Grech for what he described as a “strategic move to call Roberta Metsola’s bluff”.

Micallef spoke out after Grech’s aide Ray Bezzina called out Metsola for her decision not to contest the PN leadership election, warning that her ambiguity about her own political aspirations had cast a lingering shadow over Grech’s leadership of the party.

“Bernard Grech called Roberta Metsola’s bluff,” Micallef said.

“Metsola had long been hinting in interviews that she was planning to lead the PN and she cast a long shadow over Grech’s leadership. PN MPs and officials had long been saying the same thing, including at social activities with PN supporters.”

“Many PN supporters started saying that Metsola would return so that they can start recovering, because Grech wasn’t capable.”

“Metsola did absolutely nothing to help Grech in his tough task of leading the party. She actually did the opposite and tried to crucify him, including recently, through the invisible aid of well-known media mercenaries.”

Micallef also criticised Metsola for not inviting Grech to a recent social event in Gozo, which the PN leader turned up to anyway.

“That’s how intense the tension between Grech and Metsola had grown – until Grech, making a significant personal sacrifice, called her bluff by resigning, clearing the way for her return from Brussels to take the helm of the PN.”

“In this case, Grech played his cards perfectly. With his strategic political move, Grech welcomed Metsola with open arms – not because he wanted to but because she left him with no other choice.”

“Metsola will now go down in political history as the person who chose her Brussels seat and salary over the role of PN leader. She chose to deny the PN and its supporters for her own personal interests, and this exposes what kind of a person she is.”
