Heads Must Roll For Lying In Government Gazette Over Malta’s President Signing IVF Reform, PN MP Says

One PN MP is calling for heads to roll in the wake of the Government Gazette falsely claiming that President George Vella had signed and assented to amendments to IVF law.

“In a normal country, when there is a scandal involving a Ministry making false statements on the official Government Gazette, and again lies about the controversial law, there are resignations,” PN MP Ivan Bartolo wrote on social media.

“We have a right to know: Why did the Ministry send a false notice to DOI when it knew it was lying?”

“What does the President have to say?”

Vella is yet to sign the new piece of legislation, which will allow genetic testing prior to implantation and was approved a few weeks ago. It has proven to be controversial in staunchly pro-life circles and it appears that Vella is reluctant to sign the law himself.

Vella refused to give a straight answer to journalists when asked about the issue, insisting that the reform will become law without saying that he would give his approval.

There are suspicions that Vella may have to vacate his office temporarily, with University pro-rector Frank Bezzina only appointed by the government as acting president in June.

The Department of Information falls under the Office of the Prime Minister. However, the actual piece of legislation is the responsibility of the Health Ministry, which falls under Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne.

Lovin Malta sought clarification from Bartolo as to who exactly he thinks should resign, but no reply was forthcoming
