Two mothers seeking justice for the death of their children met and embraced in Gżira earlier this week.

On Wednesday, the Gżira local council joined Pelin Kaya’s family in planting saplings in her honour at the Independence Gardens and erecting a memorial in front of the KFC restaurant, where she was murdered earlier this year.

The victim’s mother Çiçek Kaya travelled from Turkey to attend the event, and while she was at the memorial she encountered another grieving mother.

Isabelle Bonnici, the mother of Kordin construction site accident victim JeanPaul Sofia – who has long been pleading for a public inquiry into her son’s death – was also present.

Gżira mayor Conrad Borg Manché captured the moment the two mothers met and embraced.

“Two broken mothers awaiting justice for the bitter loss of their children,” he said.

“However, justice isn’t enough for these mothers. The state must find out what caused these incidents and work to prevent them from happening again to ensure that their children wouldn’t have died for nothing.”

What action should the authorities take in light of these deaths?
