Heatwave Alerts To Be Sent By SMS Under New Maltese Safety Plan

The Ministry for Health and Active Ageing has started sending messages to people, informing them of upcoming heatwaves and advising them on the best course of action.
This early warning system is being carried out in collaboration with the Met Office.
In recent weeks, the Ministry also launched a public awareness campaign on the dangers of extreme heat, which includes practical advice on how to stay hydrated, and avoid strenuous activity and sun exposure during the hottest parts of the day.
“Extreme heat can cause health problems that may result in irreversible damage to vital organs such as the kidneys, heart, and brain. That’s why we are doing everything possible to prevent this and ensure that no life is lost unnecessarily,” Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela said, while once again stressing the importance of sun protection and staying hydrated.
It has also established day centres that provide shelter from the heat for vulnerable people with specific medical conditions, and these people are being personally. For further information. On this service, one can contact 21231231. In case of an urgent situation, one can call 1400 or 112.
