Three passengers aboard an Air Malta flight bound for Rome on Thursday afternoon reportedly lost consciousness as a result of extreme heat.

The airline stated the incident was caused by “unprecedented soaring temperatures” which were further aggravated by an air-conditioning malfunction.

According to an Air Malta statement, the incident occurred while the aircraft was still on the ground.

The plane’s high internal temperature, caused by a combination of the ongoing heatwave and a technical fault with the air conditioning system, resulted in this unfortunate situation.

The airline’s crew, along with supporting medical emergency services, promptly attended to the passengers who had fainted.

All passengers were safely evacuated from the plane, put onto buses, and returned to the terminal which caused a delay in the flights.
