The courts have denied the bail of a man who smashed the door at Mater Dei’s Accident and Emergency department (A&E) after he was left unattended despite bleeding profusely.

Appearing before the court, Inspector Jonathan Ransley said that Libyan national Adnan Saed, arrived drunk at the hospital at 3 am with a badly cut arm. He was told to sit down, and after some time he began to act violently damaging the window and door of A&E.

Ransley seemed to understand Saed’s outburst, telling the court:

“Had they bandaged him in time, this wouldn’t have happened.”

Lawyer Martha Mifsud did concede that the events took place. However, she echoed the inspector’s sentiment, insisting that Saed’s reaction was a result of a fear of losing his life.

She added that the charges themselves were harsh given the circumstance.

Saed, aged 26, has also been charged with pushing and swearing at two police officers at the scene, public drunkenness, disturbing the peace and using obscene language in public.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges. However, Saed’s request for bail was denied after he failed to prove his fixed address to the court, despite him having a clean conduct.

While he has lived in Malta for the last three years, he had also recently spent some time in Sweden. Under interrogation, which was in Maltese and without a translator, Saed said that he lived in Bugibba, when he was actually living with a friend in Valletta.
