Heavy Thunderstorm Causes Power Cuts And Turns Roads Into Rivers Around Malta

Article Featured Image

As forecast, a thunderstorm hit Malta Friday afternoon causing power cuts in various towns in the central parts of the island, and flooded some major and arterial roads in the north of Malta.

Electricity was lost in Mosta, Naxxar and Burmarrad, with EneMalta officials confirming with Lovin Malta that the power is not expected to return within at least an hour and a half.

Għadira Bay road was completely flooded, with the two lanes being completely covered in water, making it difficult for vehicles to pass.

Relatively nearby, a car broke down in Wardija Road – the road that links Burmarrad and Mgarr – with the Facebook page Malta Traffic Road Updates warning that it would be hard for other vehicles to pass.

Many roads became congested after the heavy rains hit, with the road from Burmarrad to Mellieħa coming to a standstill.

Drivers are being advised to avoid these roads, as well as roads that often get flooded until the storm subsides.
