Chris Fearne has already won the public support of several Labour politicians on his quest to become Malta’s Prime Minister.

The deputy Prime Minister has long been considered one of the favourites to succeed Joseph Muscat and is so far the only person to publicly declare his intention to run for the leadership.

These are all the Labour politicians who have publicly endorsed Fearne so far.

Transport Minister Ian Borg

“I’ve given this a lot of thought and [discussed it] with my wife, in between the sweet cries of my daughter, with my brothers in the party and with my friends in the government.”

Justice Minister Owen Bonnici

“This is the time for unity within the Labour Party and the government”

MP Glenn Bedingfield

“Now is not the time to look at our personal interests. Now is the time to look to the future and unite behind one of us who is ready to lead this country”

Parliamentary secretary for planning Chris Agius

“I’ve known Chris Fearne for decades and we had worked together at Għaqda Żgħazagħ Soċjalisti. I’ve always known him to be honest and serious and I will stand behind him to ensure this country keeps creating wealth and distributing it fairly”.

Equality Minister Edward Zammit Lewis

“Chris Fearne is best-positioned to lead this glorious part in these times of difficulty and challenges. There are times in politics when you have to forget about yourself and think only about the party and the country. This is one of those times!”

Parliamentary secretary for agriculture Clint Camilleri

“I declare my loyalty to who will become Prime Minister in the coming days. I wish Chris Fearne the best of luck from the bottom of my heart.”

MP Rosianne Cutajar

“Thank you, Chris Fearne, for bravely offering your services to the Labour Party and the country in these difficult times. I’ve already worked closely with you and I now look forward for us to continue working as a united time in favour of Malta and the Maltese.”

Environment Minister Jose Herrera

“I’m sure that the Labour Party’s upcoming new chapter will continue to build on the glorious history that each and every one of us have built over the years. Malta is and remains in our hearts, and we must all be instrumental in using our values and principles to grow stronger.”

MEP candidate Cyrus Engerer

“I’ve seen you working firsthand at Brussels when we visited MEPs together and in the heath and environment committees. You’re a person of integrity.”

Parliamentary secretary for consumer rights Deo Debattista

“I’ve known Chris Fearne since 6th Form, through medical school and in the medical profession for 30 years. He’s a surgeon, a scholar, a politician and above all a gentleman.”

MP Anton Refalo

“I support Chris Fearne’s candidature and I’m pleased to see the parliamentary group united behind him. Let’s work to turn a new page for the party and the country.”

Family Minister Michael Falzon

“I would like to thank Chris Fearne for taking this decision and I appeal for a sense of unity to be fostered within the Labour Party.”

Parliamentary secretary for reforms Julia Farrugia Portelli

“Malta needs to heal its wounds. [Fearne’s] work is focused on the patient, the most fragile people in the country. This is what Malta needs. Some say you’re too clinical but that’s what the medical profession requires and it doesn’t bother me at all. What we need right now is to be clinical, to call out wrongdoing where it exists and to build on what is good.”

Parliamentary secretary for EU funds Aaron Farrugia

“Thank you, Chris Fearne, for announcing that you are willing to serve the party, the movement and the country as a leader and therefore as the country’s 14th Prime Minister. This is the moment of proof and together, as a party and a country, we will succeed.”

MP Konrad Mizzi

“Chris Fearne has my support. Now is the time for the PL to unite as one strong force and I therefore believe that Chris Fearne alone can do so.”

MP Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi

“This is the time for important choices. A time for decisions upon which we’ll have to plan out the country’s and the party’s future, choices about who will serve this country at such a sensitive and decisive time.”

Energy Minister Joe Mizzi

“This is the time for us to be a united front for the sake of the country and the Labour Party. I’d like to thank and support deputy leader Chris Fearne for his candidature as leader.”

Foreign Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela

“In my political career, I’ve always worked with integrity and utmost dedication for the common good and that’s what I’ll keep on doing. Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne is contesting for the role of leader and I’m ready to work shoulder to shoulder with him for the good of Malta and the Labour Party.”
