Home Affairs Ministry Silent On Sexual Harassment Allegations In Malta’s Armed Forces

Malta’s Home Affairs Ministry is silent on shocking sexual harassment allegations with the armed forces, refusing to answer questions sent almost two weeks ago.

Lovin Malta recently revealed that a member of Malta’s armed forces is facing allegations of harassment after sending a series of sexually explicit images and videos to a former lover. The AFM had been informed of the incident in early 2021.

Lovin Malta has seen a series of images and videos sent by the AFM officer in question, who sent the videos while wearing his uniform and allegedly from within the army barracks.

The man was in a relationship with the woman. However, once it broke it off, the man allegedly began harassing her with naked photos and videos, one of which shows him masturbating.

The newsroom has also seen a wealth of messages sent after the break up, pestering her with attempts to video call her.

Questions sent to the Home Affairs Ministry, the AFM, and Brigadier Jefffrey Curmi remain unanswered. This included questions looking to see whether an internal investigation or inquiry will be opened into the conduct of AFM officers.

The officer in question remains part of the AFM and was recently involved in the army’s poppy day parade.

The AFM did issue a right of reply after the story’s publication, insisting that it was not their duty to investigate crimes within their ranks. However, it raises serious questions whether the AFM or Ministry are prepared to at least look into the issue.

This is not the first story of misconduct that has plagued the AFM. Sergeant Carmen Pace was in a long-term relationship with Raymond Caruana, a drug kingpin who was murdered outside his San Blas residence in Haz-Żebbuġ on 20th March 2015. She was the unnamed “female companion” who was inside the residence at the time of the murder.

Sources have told the newsroom that Curmi was well aware of the relationship between the pair – and knew that Pace was on-site when Caruana was gunned down. He did not take action with Pace actually receiving a promotion to Staff Sergeant a few months after the murder. She retired in 2018 on a taxpayer-funded pension.
