Hundreds March For Choice At Sunday’s Abortion Rally In Valletta
Hundreds of people showed up in Valletta yesterday to march for choice, making it one of the biggest turnouts Malta’s pro-choice rally has ever seen.
Activists were heard chanting ‘my body, my choice’ as they marched through the streets of the capital city, as well as ‘safe, free and legal’.
The pro-choice rally hadn’t occurred for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but this year, it was back with a bang, better than ever.
A number of local organisations were present at the rally, such as Moviment Graffitti, and Students for Choice Malta, along with organisers Women’s Rights Foundation, Voice for Choice, Doctors for Choice, and Young Progressive Beings.
“We will continue to raise our voices for all those silenced by stigma, until abortion in Malta is available, as a basic and essential part of their healthcare, to anyone who might need it,” they promised.
To this day, Malta is the last remaining country in the European Union where abortion is not allowed regardless of the circumstances that the woman is faced with.
Currently, abortion in Malta is legislated by articles 241(1) and 242, which both prohibit anyone from getting an abortion and impose a penalty on the person who terminates a pregnancy and any person who assists them.
A guilty sentence carries a prison term of anything between 18 months to three years.
Do you think it’s high time Malta recognises abortion as healthcare?
