‘I Could Give Birth At Any Time’: San Ġwann Woman Faces Hellish Blackouts 9 Months Pregnant

Yet another San Ġwann resident has spoken out about the hellish six-day power blackouts, which are exacerbated… because she is nine months pregnant.

“This is a nightmare in general, even more so because I can give birth at any time,” Elena Germondari, a 38 Italian-Maltese who lives on Triq Kunċizzjoni, told Lovin Malta.

“Can you imagine going home with a newborn without having electricity? Without being able to use the air conditioning? Without being able to use the washing machine?”

San Gwann was one of the worst affected by the disastrous power outages across Malta. With some residents were deprived of electricity and water for six consecutive days. Many had to throw all their food away and businesses have been severely affected.

To add to the heat-fuelled injury, Germondari also has a three-year-old girl who has not been able to sleep since the electric power went out last week.

For Germondari, the outage has been “traumatic” leaving her faint due to extreme sleep deprivation.

“The worst thing was that I was never heard. It was impossible to contact Enemalta. I called 153 but they said they didn’t know anything about this situation and I had to send an email to Enemalta. I did it but they never answered me back.”

Germondari believes solutions and compensation should be given immediately, especially for vulnerable groups for example giving the possibility to stay in hotels or other facilities with electricity without having to pay.

Malta has suffered one of the worst power cuts and heatwaves in Maltese history, leaving thousands without basic essentials like electricity, and in some cases, water.

More than 60 high-voltage cable faults and other network difficulties were registered last Monday. And while workers race to repair all the damage, there’s no guarantee that they will end in the near future.
