I Still Want A Public Inquiry, JeanPaul Sofia’s Mother Tells Abela After He Calls On Chief Justice To Hurry Up
Hours after Prime Minister Robert Abela urged the Chief Justice to hasten the magisterial inquiry into JeanPaul Sofia’s death, his mother reiterated that what she is requesting is a public inquiry.
In a press release, Isabelle Bonnici affirmed that while she wants justice, her appeal is to open a public inquiry besides a magisterial one.
“The point of a public inquiry is to identify what led to this incident and for amendments or new laws to be put in place so no other mother needs to go through what Isabelle went through,” a statement representing the mother’s thoughts said today.
As Bonnici asserted several times on local media, the aim of a public inquiry is to investigate the causes and take the necessary steps to ensure that no mother will have to suffer what she has suffered again.
A public inquiry should be held for every occupational death that takes place, she urged.
“As a signatory of the European Convention of Human Rights, the Maltese state has an obligation to safeguard the right to the life of its citizens and introduce structures that safeguard and protect the life of the aforementioned citizens.”
These structures can be recommended by the public inquiry that Sofia’s parents are demanding as is their right. A right that so far is being ignored.
Do you agree that a public inquiry should be held to determine the cause of this tragedy?
