I Want To Top Up My Tan In Dubai, Nicolette Ghirxi’s Murder Suspect Told Police When They Called Him In
Nicolette Ghirxi’s lawyer has published an email exchange between her suspected murderer Edward Johnston and the police after they called him in for questioning.
Ghirxi had reported Johnston for harassment in April in light of emails he sent following their breakup. The emails published by lawyer Joseph Borda show that Johnston, using the alias ‘Edwardo Sambora’, had made light of the police’s request to speak to him in person at the gender-based and domestic violence unit.
“I am just about to get on a flight to Dubai so I will have to take a rain check on your 48-hour notice interview,” Johnston said.
“It’s an unreasonable request. You fancy doing a Zoom call instead? Requesting me to attend an interview with the above in mind is an unreasonable request considering I am 2,000 miles away (and you will be aware of that). I will be back in July for some fun int he sun.”
When the police told him that no Zoom calls are permitted, Johnston mockingly told them that they will just have to “tell the judge I am on a business trip” and notify Interpol.
“I want to top up my tan in Dubai before I come back to Malta, he will understand,” Johnston wrote.
Borda noted that the law states that people who fail to comply with police orders to accompany them to a police station shall be guilty of a contravention punishable with detention and shall be liable to be arrested immediately under warrant.
“We didn’t hear that in the press conference,” he quipped.
Ghirxi was stabbed to death on Monday morning. Police officers tracked Johnston to a beach in St Julian’s, where he confessed to the murder. They shot him dead after he refused to drop a gun he was holding, which turned out to be a replica, and instead pointed it at the police.
