Transport Minister Ian Borg has ruled himself out of the race to become the next Prime Minister and has instead announced he will be endorsing Chris Fearne.

“Chris Fearne has my support,” Borg said. “I’ve given this a lot of thought and [discussed it] with my wife, in between the sweet cries of my daughter, with my brothers in the party and with my friends in the government.”

“The courage you have given me fills me with more strength and energy to work so that this party can continue leading Malta and Gozo.”

Justice Minister Owen Bonnici has also endorsed Fearne, describing him as the ideal person to lead the Labour Party and government forward.

“This is the time for unity within the PL and the government,” he said. “I will be the first to roll my sleeves up and work harder than ever before towards a better Malta. Let’s keep on working, believing and achieving!”

When announcing his candidate earlier today, Fearne pledged to ensure that the full truth emerges and that full justice is served, a reference to the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia.

He also said he will ensure that Malta will once again come “first and foremost” and work tirelessly to improve the island’s reputation overseas.
