‘If Robert Aquilina Is Arrested, I Will Go After The State’: Ex-Soldier Weighs In On Requests To Investigate Activist

A former soldier has pledged to go after the state if Repubblika activist Robert Aquilina is arrested, specifically threatening to “raise questions” about a “disgraceful and hidden” scandal involving the police and the Attorney General.
Godwin Schembri took to social media following the news that Magistrate Nadine Sant Lia instructed the police to investigate how a magisterial inquiry carried out by Ian Farrugia into Pilatus Bank was leaked to Aquilina.
Magistrate Sant Lia made this decision after Repubblika requested for the police to charge four top Pilatus bank officials who were allegedly recommended for prosecution by Magistrate Farrugia.
Aquilina took a stand of defiance to this order promising that he would not provide any information to Police Commissioner Angelo Gafà he he is summoned for an interrogation.
Schembri was clear in his reaction to the possibility of an investigation into Aquilina.
“If the government and the Police Commissioner are considering arresting or framing Robert Aquilina, they should think about it very carefully.”
“One must always remember the difference between apprehending a criminal like Keith Schembri and a credible person like a notary.”
Schembri went on to note that Aquilina’s credibility is clear in his role as Malta’s representative at the Falcone Foundation – an anti-mafia organisation led by the sister of Magistrate Giovanni Falcone.
“He is a person who commands immense trust and respect, even from one of the most powerful women in our country. These qualities are not handed out lightly, and not everyone possesses them.”
Schembri uploaded a photo of Maria Falcone, Aquilina and President Myriam Spiteri Debono, saying “I am posting this photo, which I personally took a few weeks ago in the square in Siġġiewi, to make it clear to anyone who needs to understand. If they attempt to touch the notary, all hell will break loose.”
“As Godwin Schembri, I publicly declare that if today, tomorrow, or in the coming days, Police Commissioner Angelo Gafà causes any harm to my friend, resulting in confusion for his wife or tears from his three children, I will respond in kind against the state, as I have done before . And, as has happened before, certain people will start to feel the repercussions.”
“In retaliation, I will then raise one or more questions about a disgraceful and hidden scandal involving the police and the Attorney General.”
“Test me, please,” he powerfully concluded.
In 2018, Schembri was sacked from the Armed Forces of Malta after he was caught on video mocking an AFM gate for being useless and jokingly highlighting the irony of spending some €16,000 on an ineffective gate but not having enough money for basic army supplies like undervests and socks.
Schembri requested a judicial review into his dismissal, arguing it was a ““discriminatory” and “unreasonable” measure.
Following his dismissal, a Facebook group was set up to show solidarity with him.
