IĠM Welcomes Publication Of Media Reforms Report As State Decides To Issue White Paper
The Institute of Maltese Journalists (IĠM) has welcomed the tabling of the report drafted by the Committee of Media Experts on Monday, as well as the Prime Minister’s agreement with issuing a White Paper on the media reforms.
“Public consultation is an important step to ensuring that the new media laws protect journalism, journalists, and the public interest,” the IĠM said in a statement.
“There are several other recommendations in the Daphne Caruana Galizia public inquiry report which still need to be tackled.”
“While we await the publication of this White Paper, we encourage all stakeholders to make their voice heard and participate in the consultation,” it said.
The IĠM assured it will analyse the committee’s report and work with journalists and editors to ensure that their interests are protected by the new laws.
In a significant announcement that marks the beginning of Parliament’s post-summer activities, Prime Minister Robert Abela confirmed that the government will be releasing a white paper detailing proposed media reforms.
The announcement comes in the wake of several media professionals and the esteemed Institute of Maltese Journalists urging for transparency.
They had set a clear message last Friday – either the report by the Committee of Media Experts sees the light of day in Parliament, or they would bring it to the public domain themselves.
