A flamingo with gun wounds was recovered earlier today by a fisherman off the coast of Gozo and Birdlife Malta has named this as the third incident of illegal hunting this autumn season.

“Since the start of the season on 1st September, we also received a Black-crowned Night-heron and a Eurasian Collared-dove,” the NGO explained.

The autumn hunting season only began last Thursday and yet, illegal casualties have infested the island.

According to BirdLife Malta, The Night Heron was recovered by police from Dingli, while the Collared Dove was found by a member of the public in Attard.

These were both recovered in the less than 24 hours of the start of the season.

Since these incidents, all three birds have been taken to the state’s vet who confirmed that they were shot illegally.

The autumn hunting season runs for five months until the end of January 2023.
