Prime Minister Robert Abela has congratulated Keir Starmer’s victory in the UK’s general election, becoming the country’s new prime minister.

“Delighted by @Keir_Starmer’s resounding victory in the UK general election. Congratulations to @UKLabour for driving a progressive and engaging campaign that empowered UK citizens. I look forward to strengthening further the excellent relations between Malta and the UK – RA,” Abela wrote on X.

Starmer proclaimed “change begins now” following his sweeping victory in the UK general election, achieving the 326 seats needed for a majority in the House of Commons and subsequently ending 14 years of Conservative governance.

Starmer brought the Labour Party back to the centre of British politics in an attempt to broaden its appeal to voters, and clearly, it worked.

Starmer started as a socialist, drifted to the soft left, and when the hard left Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn fell in 2019, Starmer stood for the party leadership on a leftist platform, making 10 pledges to appeal to his predecessor’s supporters. However, once in power, he scrapped nine of them, just keeping the promise to provide effective opposition.

What do you make of his victory?
