In bitter irony, Malta lost another life at the hands of the construction industry, hours before a packed vigil to mourn Jean Paul Sofia.

On Monday, 26-year-old Syrian man Mohammed Kasem Hashem Alkhateeb succumbed to his injuries after an incident in Rabat. His Maltese partner, Nicole Muscat, mourned the loss of his life.

“In my heart forever my love,” Muscat wrote on social media.

Other local figures joined in the mourning. “From my heart, I’d like to express my solidarity,” Terry ta’ Bormla said, addressing Muscat.

“He was a man with a full heart and we are going to miss his presence. We will remember his beautiful life together. I am here for you,” she said.

Activist Omar Rababah said that the vigil was in his name too.

“Another victim of construction. He fell two days before on a site in Rabat and now is not with us anymore.”

“He was only 26 years old. [The vigil] is for you too,” Rababah wrote on Facebook.

Police were informed of the incident at around 5.30pm on Thursday, which occurred along a construction site situated in Triq Alessandro Curmy, Rabat. The man, a resident of Bormla, was transported to Mater Dei Hospital after a one-storey fall.

Later on, it was confirmed that he was suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was unfortunately pronounced dead last night.

A magisterial inquiry, police investigations, and investigations by The Occupational Health and Safety Authority are ongoing.

RIP Mohammed
