Incredible Yazmin Zammit Stevens Snatches First Place In International Weightlifting Competition
Malta’s weightlifting queen Yazmin Zammit Stevens has impressed internationally again after finishing in 1st place in the 69kg category during the 2018 Weightlifting ELEIKO Email International Tournament in Australia. She beat out 51 other world-class athletes in her group from all over the world to come out on top.
She had finished in 4th place in the same tournament just last year, but she’s outdone herself this year after finishing with her 185kg total. She beat out her closest competitor, New Zealand’s Lovett, by 7kg and third place finisher, Nauru’s Abouke by 10kg.
Combined with her recent Commonwealth Games and Mediterranean Games successes, Yazmin doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon.
She wasn’t the only Maltese athlete to achieve impressive results
Elisia Scicluna finished 4th place overall in the 90kg category, beating out 26 other athletes to achieve her top position.
12-year-old Tenishia Thorton, only weighing in at 41.7kg, finished in 8th place in the 48kg category behind senior athletes from Australia, Nauru, Solomon Island, New Zealand and Guam.
Roberta Tabone finished 10th place in the 69kg category with a 164kg total. Tabone, who is usually known for her performance in cross-fit competitions, has recently also ventured into the weightlifting world and has showed promise in her performances.
The best club result from Malta came from the Alpha Weightlifting Club women where they finished in 11th place from 43 clubs with a total of 67 points.
The Cougars Club from Australia won the overall Club competition, followed by the Taborio Club from Kiribati and Rocks Clubs from Nauru.
