An inquiry into Malta’s prison has been launched after yet another suicide attempt within Corradino Correctional Facility.

In a statement, the Home Affairs Ministry said that the board will be chaired by psychiatrist Anton Grech, while the other two members will be Janice Formosa Pace and George Grech. Formosa Pace has resigned from the Governance Board of CCF to form part of the panel.

The inquiry will scrutinise the procedures of CCF, particularly with regards to the assessment of the mental and physical health of both new and longstanding inmates. It will also look at the treatment of prisoners with addiction and prisoners who have had stints at Mount Carmel Hospital.

The decision comes after a suicide attempt inside the prison. CCF officials said in a statement that medical staff were informed of the incident at 5.05pm on 8th August, which involved a 30-year-old Maltese man.

The man has been taken to Mater Dei Hospital for further treatment.

A police investigation is underway and a magisterial inquiry has been opened.

This incident comes just weeks after a female inmate following an attempted suicide.
