An intensive search is underway at Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq for a 20 year-old diver who went missing during a diving expedition with his friend yesterday.

The diver, who has been identified as Neil Zammit, had gone diving in the area between White Rocks and the Splash and Fun water park with a 38 year-old friend.

The alarm was raised after the two divers failed to surface, prompting the Armed Forces of Malta to send out a helicopter, a patrol boat and a number of divers to search for them. While the 38 year-old diver was found alive, his young friend’s current whereabouts remain unknown.

According to eyewitnesses who spoke to One News, there were emotional scenes at Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq as the police had to hold off Zammit’s girlfriend from jumping into the sea to join the search for her boyfriend.

The AFM mission was suspended at around 00:30 but resumed a few hours later.
