Iosif Galea has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison for tax evasion, months after he was arrested in Italy on a European Arrest Warrant.

Galea, in his capacity as director for Malta-registered Tipbet Limited, evaded €1.7 million in taxes to the German state between 2017 and 2019.

Galea was arrested at Brindisi Airport on 14th-15th May by the Italian police while a group holiday with former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat.

The case has generated significant controversy particularly due to the failure of Maltese authorities to act on the arrest warrant. He is also wanted in Malta over an alleged racket at the Malta Gaming Authority, which has seen two former officials charged.

It has since been revealed that three requests from Germany had been ignored by Maltese officials. The first was sent in 2021.

Galea has since asked German authorities if he can serve his sentence in Malta.

Should Galea be allowed to serve his sentence in Malta?
