Is This The Coast Road’s Future? Architects Roll Out New Concept Design For Malta’s Longest Road

Malta’s longest road could become way friendlier to pedestrians and cyclists… if a concept project proposed by a local architectural firm ever sees the light of day.

MA Architects & Structural Engineers has proposed a new vision for the part of the Coast Road which stretches from Splash and Fun Park to Salina Bay.

It proposes keeping the road as a dual carriageway but extending the bicycle lane into a two-way lane and adding a new pedestrian pathway.

Protective barriers would be installed on either side of the pedestrian pathway, which would also include scattered canopy areas and pockets of activity where pedestrians can take a break to enjoy the views, buy something or watch an informal activity.

“A concept project we worked on with people who have a vision for a better and healthier environment.  The idea is to promote non-vehicle commuting, physical exercise and to allow more pedestrians and cyclists to enjoy the coastline safely,” the architectural firm.

While it wasn’t long ago that the Coast Road benefitted from an upgrade, this project would tick a number of boxes in the 2050 national transport strategy, which clearly that alternative options like walking and cycling should be promoted to wean people off private cars.
