The mother of a Maltese youth who lost his life in a building collapse has shared her empathy with the mother of a worker who lost his life on a construction site today.

The message comes just hours before a demonstration is being held in Valletta calling for the truth to be unveiled in the death of 20-year-old Jean Paul Sofia.

“We’ve lost another son today,” Isbelle Bonnici, Jean Paul’s mother, said. “Who knows the pain his mother, father and all who loved him are going through right now.”

“I understand them as we went through the worst pain a mother can ever carry.”

Her message comes after 26-year-old Syrian man Mohammed Kasem Hashem Alkhateeb died while in Mater Dei Hospital, three days after a construction site incident in Rabat left him injured.

He is the 30th victim over four years to the construction industry in Malta.

The peaceful protest dedicated to Jean Paul Sofia will be happening at 8pm in front of Castille in Valletta.

Thousands have already registered their interest – with organisers urging attendees to bring a candle with them.
