‘It’s A Disgrace’: Maltese Dog Owner Opens Up On Struggle To Find 24-Hour Vet
A dog owner expressed her frustration at the state of emergency vet care after her pet suffered an infection late at night.
Kathy Cardona said that after her dog Pippa got sick this week, she called up several supposed 24-hour vet services but all the numbers were either switched off or directed her to voicemail.
“My dogs are like my children, but in Malta it’s clear that there’s no proper support system for raising them,” Kathy warned.
“If something happens to your pet at 2am, you’re expected to let it die. What happened to the Ta’ Qali Animal Hospital, which was supposed to offer 24-hour service or the emergency “pet on wheels”service? Weren’t they meant to be available 24/7?”
She showed Lovin Malta screenshots of her call history, which shows she called up 13 numbers without a reply between 2:48am and 6:47am.
“My partner, my dog, and I have been awake since last night as we continue to wait for a vet to respond. I’m beyond exhausted,” she said.
“There is absolutely no adequate help for animal welfare in Malta. It’s a disgrace. We must push for better rights for animals. The thought of being helpless if my dog’s health deteriorates in the middle of the night and is left to die in my arms is beyond heartbreaking.”
Kathy managed to get through to a vet on Tuesday morning, and Pippa was given antibiotics and placed on a drip. She said yesterday that her dog is doing great.
