Watch: It’s Actually Happened – First Two Cannabis Clubs In Malta Granted Operational Licenses

It’s finally happened: the first operational licenses for cannabis harm reduction associations have recently been granted to two organisations, allowing them to commence cannabis cultivation – with distribution set to begin early next year.

In a press conference, Leonid McKay, the Executive Chairperson of the Authority for Responsible Cannabis Use (ARUC), disclosed that the initial operational licenses were officially issued in October.

The two associations, KDD Society and Ta’ Zelli, can now proceed with the distribution of cannabis to their members, subject to having the product in their possession.

The cannabis products will undergo testing by the clubs themselves according to ARUC standards before they are made available to the members.

Regarding pricing, McKay clarified that ARUC will refrain from exerting any control over the pricing of cannabis. However, he pointed out that the prices are anticipated to be competitive with those found on the black market.

Simultaneously, four additional associations have obtained in-principle licenses and are in advanced stages of acquiring operational licenses.

McKay emphasised that ARUC’s mission avoids the commercialisation of cannabis, stating that individuals whose objectives do not align with the authority’s principles are not encouraged to collaborate with it.

In response, Rebecca Buttigieg, the parliamentary secretary for reforms, celebrated Tuesday’s announcement as a historic milestone. She underscored the unwavering commitment to combat drug trafficking, emphasising a zero-tolerance policy in this regard.
