It’s Getting Hot In Here: Health Warning Issued, Here’s How To Stay Safe In Malta’s Summer Weather
The Health Promotion and Disease Prevention directorate has advised the public to keep well hydrated during the hot summer months ahead – when high temperatures are likely to cause dehydration, heat exhaustion or heatstroke.
“Heat can affect everyone, but some people run a greater risk of serious harm including older people, babies, young children, people with chronic conditions and physically active people.”
HPDP issued this advice for those seeking to stay safe over the coming months:
- Avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun during hot periods, between 11am and 4pm
- Close curtains in rooms with sun-facing windows, to keep indoor spaces cooler
- Drink regularly to stay hydrated – and eat more cold food
- Avoid drinking dehydrating liquids such as alcohol, coffee, tea, and caffeinated soft drinks
- Wear light, loose fitting clothing
- Don’t ever leave anyone, especially infants, young children or animals, in a closed, parked vehicle
- Avoid strenuous exercise in the hottest parts of the day
- Walk in the shade, apply sunscreen and wear hats
- Seek medical advice if you encounter any concerning symptoms
For those irresponsible individuals seeking to be unsafe over the coming months:
- Do the opposite of everything listed above
HDPD also advised that regular check-ins on elderly people – particularly those who live alone – can help to ensure that those who most vulnerable are taken care of.
