This Republic Day, Malta paid tribute to extraordinary individuals who have left a lasting impact on the nation.

Among them were athlete-activist Jake Vella, politician Karl Gouder, and diplomat Lorenzo Vella, who were posthumously awarded the Midalja għall-Qadi tar-Repubblika for their distinguished service to the country.

The annual Republic Day honours, held at the Grandmaster’s Palace in Valletta, saw President Myriam Spiteri Debono present these prestigious awards to the families of the recipients, acknowledging their contributions in the face of incredible challenges.

Jake Vella, who passed away in August at the age of 15, was a beacon of courage. Despite battling the rare condition ROHHAD, Jake inspired many through his determination. From organising swimming challenges to raising funds for abandoned animals, his heart and fighting spirit left a legacy of resilience and kindness.

Diplomat Lorenzo Vella also passed away in August, aged 43, following a short illness. Known for his distinguished career in foreign relations, Lorenzo led Malta’s European Commission Representation, exemplifying dedication and excellence in service to his country.

Karl Gouder, a former Nationalist MP, mayor of St Julian’s, and media leader, tragically passed away in September at 45. Remembered for his commitment to public service, Karl’s career was marked by his leadership and a vision for unity within his party and beyond.

In total, 20 individuals and one organisation were honoured during the ceremony, including veteran actor Narcy Calamatta, who was made a Member of the National Order of Merit, and academic and poet Daniel Massa.
