Jason Azzopardi Discredits Andrea Prudente’s Life-Threatening Situation, Says It Was ‘All Planned’
Prominent lawyer and former Nationalist MP Jason Azzopardi has discredited Andrea Prudente’s life-threatening situation, saying it was all planned in advance to kickstart a discussion on Malta’s abortion laws.
Prudente was just a tourist enjoying her days on the Maltese islands last summer when she experienced complications in her ongoing pregnancy and required an emergency termination.
Local doctors had informed Prudente that while she is at risk of septic shock and the fetus had no chance of making it, they would not be able to terminate her pregnancy due to Malta’s strict abortion laws. She was eventually airlifted to Spain to get an abortion.
“You really need to be trash, to conspire with people outside of Malta to bring a pregnant woman and create a controversy regarding the termination of pregnancies while pretending her life was in danger,” Azzopardi wrote on social media.
“This is not a hypothesis, it’s not a theory, it is a factual and objective truth as it happened,” he claimed.
“Open your eyes,” he continued.
Azzopardi’s recent claims have angered people all over Malta, with many calling on him to provide proof to support his allegations.
Leading activist Andre Callus from Moviment Graffitti even went as far as saying that Azzopardi’s claims are “an absurd conspiracy theory” highlighting that such claims only indicate a high presence of sexism and misogyny in the country.
Alexia DeBono from Volt Malta also said that she “thought better of a lawyer so dedicated to justice and truth” and that such insinuations are “horrific”.
“Comments like this are not based on facts, logic, or integrity, but are populist and based on a blind following of a world-view that only views bodily autonomy and freedom of choice as something people should be punished for,” she continued.
Lovin Malta also reached out to Lara Dimitrijevic, Prudente’s lawyer, but she could not comment at this moment.
