PL executive member Jason Micallef has come out strongly against the government’s proposed change to the St Julian’s local plans to accommodate a high-rise project at Villa Rosa.

Micallef said he intends to put the Villa Rosa plan on the agenda of the PL executive, which he said “shouldn’t serve as a rubber stamp for strange decisions”.

“The news about the Villa Rosa project is on the national agenda and has ended up on every media platform. Wherever you go, you can find people talking about it,” Micallef said.

“There is a lot of anger on what has been reported so far and I will personally ensure that this case is discussed within the PL executive as soon as possible as is the duty of the party’s leadership and our obligation as executive members towards the delegates.”

“The PL’s internal structures should never serve as a rubber stamp for strange decisions, no matter who they’re taken by,  that result in suffering for the people – in this case, the residents of Pembroke and the PL as a whole.”

Developer Anton Camilleri (Il-Franċiż) already has a permit to develop the former Villa Rosa site into a mixed development project but is seeking a fresh permit that would allow the project to include high-rise buildings.

Although the current local plans don’t allow high-rise buildings, Cabinet recently gave its go-ahead to the Planning Authority to amend these plans. A public consultation process will have to take place first.

The Pembroke local council has said it has “serious reservations” about the proposal, with mayor Kaylon Zammit warning it would “bury” residents.
