Jason Micallef: Enemalta Should Begin Compensating Anyone Facing Power Cuts During Summer Heat

Did you face the sweltering heat last without any electricity? Then you should be compensated fairly for it… at least, according to Jason Micallef.
As some families and business owners faced multiple power cuts in towns like Mosta, Naxxar, Fgura, Żurrieq, and Siġġiewi over a two-day period during one of the hottest weeks on record, Micallef said an apology no longer cuts it.
“I understand that situations like these can occur from time to time, and I appreciate the efforts made by Enemalta workers to overcome significant challenges, restore service, and bring the situation back to normal,” he said.
“On the other hand, when thousands of individuals were left without electricity for long hours both during the night and day over a period of two days, Enemalta should begin compensating affected customers with a discount on their first electricity bill following the restoration of service.”
“In extreme cases like the one we experienced this week, apologies from Enemalta are not sufficient for the affected customers.”
Beyond the serious heat, many businesses took to social media to complain about the frozen stock they were set to lose in the face of continued power cuts.
“We must understand that there are hundreds who lost food and/or frozen items, resulting in significant financial losses for consumers/families as well as businesses. These losses can be quite substantial.”
Enemalta itself took to social media to explain that its team took on no less than nine network faults throughout the night.
“Electricity supply to many customers impacted was restored during the night. Several repairs are still in progress and will continue during the day. Customers in three remaining localised areas in Żurrieq, Naxxar and Żebbuġ, where extensive repairs are required, will be reconnected as soon as possible.”
Do you think individuals should be compensated for losses incurred during power cuts?
