Jean Claude Micallef has resigned as CEO of the Maltese Sports Integrity Authority, just three months after his appointment.

“With regret, I have just submitted my resignation letter as Chief Executive of the Maltese Sports Integrity Authority,” Micallef announced on Wednesday, adding that he remains committed to supporting the Maltese sporting community.

His decision follows a breakdown in his relationship with the authority’s seven-person board, which reportedly began deteriorating soon after he took on the role in December.

Earlier today, Sports Minister Clifton Grima rejected the resignations of the authority’s chairman Antonio Mizzi and secretary Frank Camilleri which led to Micallef taking this decision to step down.

Tensions escalated further after reports surfaced that Micallef had engaged a banned footballer to work within the authority and was facing financial issues.

However, Micallef denied these claims in his resignation and wrote down his observations on the matter where he alleged that one of the protagonists in the contract worked in a deceptive manner with Times of Malta.
