Jean Paul Sofia Valletta Entrance Banner Will Stay Up Until Inquiry Is Implemented

For the past few months, every visitor to Valletta has come across a large banner positioned right at the capital’s entrance, demanding justice for Jean Paul Sofia.

And although the public inquiry that campaigners demanded has now been concluded and published, the banner will stay where it is, at least for now.

“The banner will stay up until the recommendations of the report are fully implemented to remind the Maltese state of its responsibility,” a spokesperson for the campaign told Lovin Malta.

Protest banners have often been hung in that spot, its central position ensuring that MPs must see it whenever they look out of Parliament’s windows.

Although most banners tend to be short-lived, the Jean Paul Sofia one has successfully stood its ground since summer, even though the police had initially arrested the young activist who hung it.

A number of top government officials have already tendered their resignations following the public inquiry’s conclusion, but the PN are now demanding the resignations of Ministers Miriam Dalli, Silvio Schembri, and Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Robert Abela has pledged to implement all of the inquiry’s recommendations, over and above other initiatives such as free legal and architectural aid for citizens aggrieved by construction.

What action should the government take in the wake of this inquiry?
