The daughters of former EU Commissioner John Dalli, along with four other people, will reportedly be charged in court with fraud and money laundering in connection with accusations they had helped run a Ponzi scheme which had scammed evangelical Christians of millions of dollars.

As first reported by the Malta Independent, charges of money laundering will be filed by the police against Louise Dalli and her sister Claire Gauci Borda, as well as against Eloise Marie Corbin Klein, Charles Ray Jackson, Elizabeth Jean Jackson and Robert Mitchell McIvor.

Claire Gauci Borda will be charged separately with breaching the Money Laundering And Financing Of Terrorism Act and with failing to carry out her professional duties as an accountant and auditor.

All six will be charged with money laundering, misappropriation of funds, fraud, making a false declaration to a public authority and the falsification and use of documents.

The alleged Ponzi scheme, first reported by assassinated journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia back in 2015, was run by Eloise Marie Corbin Klein – who used several aliases including Mary Swan and Lady Bird. Caruana Galizia reported she had posed as a missionary and scammed elderly Christians of some $600,000 by convincing them to invest their savings into a bank account on the assumption that the money was going toward an African mining project. Instead, the money was funnelled into two Maltese companies – Tyre Ltd and Corporate Group – which are owned by Louise Dalli and Claire Gauci Borda and which are registered their father’s Portomaso home.

Corbin worked out of a rented flat in High Street, Sliema, which was raided by the police in May, 2015.

In March, Caruana Galizia reported that the police had collected enough evidence to prosecute Dalli’s two daughters in October 2016 but had failed to do so. John Dalli was not going to be charged himself as it was his daughters’ names which were on all documents and correspondence.

Quoting anonymous sources, the Times of Malta reported today that the police had been “sitting” on the charges for over two years. They said the FBI had pushed the charges to be filed in the US, but the Maltese police were reluctant to give up the case after doing all the groundwork.

Back in 2012, Caruana Galizia reported that Dalli – still European Commissioner for Health – and his daughter Louisa had secretly travelled to the Bahamas to meet up with Marie Eloise Corbin. Indeed, she published a photo of the three of them sitting on a bench and smiling.

Dalli has decried the Bahamas story as a fabrication, citing an email which had been sent to OLAF by Mike Brady – a US citizen who represented seven elderly Christians who were scammed by Corbin.

“Mr. Dalli was there but in no way was part of the negotiation. The only comments he offered was if this project were to get off the ground how much good it would do for people in areas of Africa that did not have power or clean drinking water,” Brady wrote. “Mr. Dalli’s only interest was from a humanitarian perspective which impressed me as a Christian by his concern for people around the world who were in need of what this project might bring them.”
