Jordan Azzopardi, the suspected drug kingpin known as ‘El Chapo Ta’ Malta’, was found with a substantial amount of cocaine following a police operation.

In a statement, police said that an unnamed man, which reports have confirmed is Azzopardi, had been arrested over drug trafficking and possession charges in Madliena this afternoon.

The arrest happened at around 3.15pm after officers were tailing Azzopardi as he drove his BMW in Madliena.

Police were following him as they believed he was carrying drugs. Azzopardi then tried to evade police, driving dangerously along windy Madliena roads, eventually colliding with another car.

He was found with a substantial amount of drugs believed to be cocaine. No exact weight was given.

Azzopardi is currently out on bail on drug trafficking charges. A magisterial inquiry has now been opened into the latest case and a police investigation is underway.

Azzopardi was notorious for his alleged drug operation and had become proficient at evading the police’s grasp.

He allegedly had multiple properties around the island that featured fake walls, hard-to-penetrate steel doors, CCTV, stone barricades, and entire vats of acid to throw the heroin and cocaine in if he was ever caught.

Raids in Balzan, Birkirkara, Marsa, Pieta, Blata l-Bajda and Gżira were all held in an attempt to find Azzopardi. However, he evaded police on at least four different occasions.

One person who was arrested during raids described how Azzopardi had pulled a knife on him and hit him with it, while another said he was violent towards his employees as well as drug users.
