Joseph Muscat: ‘Michelle Has Known New President For Longer Than She Has Known Me’
Joseph Muscat has praised new President Myriam Spiteri Debono and said his wife Michelle Muscat is extremely close to her.
“Myriam Spiteri Debono was a good choice for President, a person of substance who has worked in politics and close to the people for years,” Muscat said.
“Her baptism of fire was when she served as Speaker and carried out her duty fairly in a tough period.”
“I am glad that the role of head of state seems to be alternating between a woman and a man, in a manner that sends out a strong message in favour of equality.”
“Michelle has known Myriam for much longer than I have and for longer than she has know me, because her mother used to work with her.”
“Michelle’s family always recounts small anecdotes of the respect Myriam had shown her mother and vice versa.”
She said the new President stayed by his late mother-in-law Emmanuela Tanti’s side when she was affected by a rare illness.
“She visited her several times in the short time she had left before she passed away,” she said.
“She used to give Michelle courage in her studies and was an inspiration to her as one of her first female political role models. They later worked together when Myriam was president of the PL’s women’s section and Michelle was Alfred Sant’s personal assistant.”
He said he was sad that he couldn’t make it to the new President’s inauguration because he was on holiday and wished her the very best in her new role.
