Joseph Muscat’s lawyer Ishmael Psaila said the PL leadership dissuaded him from contesting for an official party role due to his connection to the former Prime Minister.

Psaila said numerous delegates, activists and other party members has approached him, urging him to run for a position within the Labour Party Administration following the electoral results last June.

Despite his interest in contributing to the party’s success as PL President, Psaila decided against contesting.

He cited his professional commitment to Muscat as a significant factor, which the PL leadership apparently believed could complicate or hinder the party’s progress.

“Whoever is in the leadership of the Party felt that this factor could be an obstacle for the party,” Psaila stated, showing the delicate balance between his legal career and potential political roles.

Psaila also expressed his belief that the legal profession and political involvement should not be conflated, stating that his primary concern is the good of the Party and reiterating that “no one is bigger than the party.”

Consequently, he has chosen not to pursue the presidential role but remains willing to assist the party in other capacities, reaffirming his commitment to the Party’s future.

In his message to the party members, Psaila promised that his “door will remain open” to hear their concerns and to ensure that the party remains sensitive to those most in need.

He urged delegates to choose freely in the upcoming elections, hoping this would serve as an opportunity to strengthen the Party’s structures and prepare for the challenges ahead.

Psaila concluded by thanking those who had shown confidence in him, highlighting his ongoing dedication to the Labour Party’s success.
