Joseph Muscat’s Proposal For Radical Change In Malta Premier League Approved By Clubs
A proposal by Malta Premier League chairman and former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat to shake up the local league system has been approved by the majority of clubs.
The proposal will see the Malta Premier League embrace the ‘apertura and clausura’ model that exists in several South American and Central American leagues.
12 Premier League clubs will play one game against each other in an initial league, with the top six and bottom six then split into two groups. The winner of the first group will win the first championship.
After a short break, the league will start from scratch, meaning the 12 teams will play against each other again, after which they will be split into groups.
If the same club who won the original championship wins the second one too, they will automatically crowned Malta Premier League winners. However, if a different club wins, the two clubs will face off against each other in a final to determine the ultimate winner.
Rules for European qualification and relegation remain unclear at this stage but should be clarified following discussions with the Malta Football Association.
According to Replay, this proposal was presented to clubs by Muscat. Out of the current 14 Premier League clubs, nine voted in favour of the change while four were agains it, and one abstained.
The changes have been proposed to add an element of excitement to the league, with the possibility of a decisive final to close off the season. However, it also risks diluting the significance of certain games.
