In the last five months, the Building and Construction Authority has issued just over 250 penalties relating to construction site shortcomings across the islands.

The details were revealed yesterday by Planning Minister Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, who was answering a parliamentary question tabled by PN MP Graziella Galea.

Azzopardi identified a total of 254 issued this year, with the highest number of penalties, 166, issued for works done without the appropriate documentation or authorisation from the authority.

Meanwhile, 16 penalties were issued for failing to carry out works as outlined in the method statement, while seven penalties were issued due to a lack of precautions to avoid damage to the water system of nearby properties.

On the other hand, 25 penalties were issued due to shortcomings of the advisory board. Seven penalties were also issued due to a failure to take up inadequate measures to mitigate dust emissions.

Another 20 penalties were issued relating to excessive noise or work done during times that are not permitted time by law, such as public holidays or Sundays.

Six penalties were also issued in cases where a boundary wall was not set up adequately, with one penalty being issued for machinery too close to a public street.

A small number of other penalties were also issued due to inadequate hoarding, closure of public spaces due to machinery, and failure to remove unwanted material from the site.

What do you make of these numbers?
