Cabinet ministers will later this month be called to testify under oath about that controversial late-night meeting in which Yorgen Fenech was denied a Presidential Pardon.

Fenech, who requested a pardon to reveal others involved in the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, is petitioning the court to declare the Cabinet decision null and void, arguing that they were acting as judges in their own case.

The meeting also took place while the Prime Minister’s former Chief of Staff Keith Schembri was released from police arrest after being questioned for his involvement in the murder.

Schembri will also be called to testify under oath in the court case, which is scheduled for December 16th.

Details of the Cabinet meeting have been emerging daily as unrest within Labour grows thanks to Joseph Muscat’s decision to postpone his resignation till mid-January.

Just today, MaltaToday reported that Schembri made a threatening call to the wife of Robert Abela, the legal advisor to the Prime Minister.

Abela had told Muscat that Schembri tried to screw him over. MaltaToday reported that Schembri then called Lydia Abela, who is also the Labour Party’s executive secretary, and told her: “I know what your husband said about me.”

“Schembri tried to call all ministers,” one minister told MaltaToday. “Everyone blocked him.”

Fenech’s lawyers are expected to argue that the Cabinet decision to deny him a pardon was vitiated in part due to Schembri’s pressure.

The doctor who allegedly acted as a messenger between Schembri and Fenech has also been asked to testify.

The Cabinet meeting ended with a press conference  with the Prime Minister at 4am after which journalists were kept locked in a room by ministry heavies.
