A Klabb 3-16 official has resigned after a child managed to walk out of the centre and onto the street.

The incident, which occurred last week at the Qawra primary school, was first flagged by PN MP Justin Schembri.

“The Foundation for Educational Services must seriously wake up and see how it’s going to solve the problems at Klabb 3-16 centres,” Schembri said.

“It’s unacceptable that a four-year-old boy who was attending the centre a week ago ended up lost in the street two blocks away from the school,” he said. “The police were even informed about this. What changes have been made since then?”

“This is the result of staff not being paid enough, a shortage of human resources and mismanagement.”

The Education Ministry confirmed with Lovin Malta that the situation did take place and that immediate steps, including the official’s resignation, were taken to address it.

“The official responsible for ensuring the observance of the established procedure of discharging the children to their parents’ custody did not follow the established procedure,” a Ministry spokesperson said.

“As a result of this, disciplinary proceedings were initiated, leading to the subsequent resignation of this employee. Currently, the school provides the service of Klabb 3-16 to 430 children, with a renewed commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of the students by upholding the established procedures and protocols.”
