The Labour Party’s chief executive Randolph De Battista has once again warned the party that it risks becoming the cause of its own downfall if it fails to recognise and address its shortcomings.

In a Facebook post this morning, De Battista linked his followers to a speech he had given earlier this year in which he urged the party not to let complacency set in and to start thinking more independently from the government.

“Some days, I feel like I must return to my speech about how important it is for us to become a better version of ourselves and to address our shortcomings,” he said. “NO ONE must take the party for granted and we must be careful not to place all we have achieved in jeopardy ourselves. I still believe in this speech and I will keep on striving to achieve its aims. We have a DUTY to all our supporters and to everyone who has yet to trust us to make a greater effort towards becoming a better version of ourselves.”

Although De Battista didn’t specify what prompted him to return to his speech, his intervention came a day after it was revealed that the Planning Authority had jetted in one of its board members from a family holiday in Sicily to vote in favour of the db high-rise project in Pembroke. Prime Minister Joseph Muscat has said he disagreed with the Planning Authority’s line of action, while Opposition leader Adrian Delia has called for an independent inquiry into the incident.
