Reacting to reports that he will be charged with domestic violence after an incident involving his teenage son, Labour MP Anton Refalo said “we all try to do the best for our children”.

While not commenting on the case itself, in which he allegedly physically assaulted his son after discovering he had been sharing revenge porn of his ex-girlfriend, the former Gozo Minister said that rapid cultural changes should not come at the cost of traditional Maltese and Gozitan values.

“We live in a rapidly changing society, partly facing a new reality brought byabout through globalisation and the internet, and as good as development can be, it also brings challenges to us when it comes to finding a balance between progress and our traditional values which make Gozo and Malta so unique,” he said. “We all try to do the best for us, our neighbourhood, society, our families and especially our children.”

“But even if we try to adjust to the world of today, there are certain values that in my opinion are of ever-lasting kind, such as kindness, loyalty, tolerance and respect.”

“A better society can only be achieved if we orientate after our inner conviction no matter how the outer world changes.”

Quoting police sources, The Times of Malta last week reported that Refalo got into a fight with his son at the family home after discovering he had been sharing compromising pictures of his ex without her consent, a criminal act. According to The Times, Refalo was informed of the alleged revenge porn by the father of his son’s ex-girlfriend.

Refalo has been a Labour MP since 1987, served as Gozo Minister between 2013 and 2017, and is currently chairman of Heritage Malta.
