The Labour Party has confirmed four new MEP candidates to contest next year’s European Parliament elections.

Former prime minister Alfred Sant, social policy expert Mary Gauci, linguist and European Studies graduate Lorna Vassallo and economist and negotiator Robert Micallef have all been announced as PL candidates.

They join 10 others who have already been announced to bring the total list to 14 candidates. They will now prepare to contest the European Parliament election and potentially represent Malta in Brussels. Current MEP Marlene Mizzi has confirmed that she will not be re-contesting her seat.

Candidates had until the end of November to submit their candidacy according to the party’s statute

The other ten candidates that have already submitted their nomination are Cyrus Engerer, Alex Agius Saliba, Felix Busuttil, Miriam Dalli, James Grech, Joe Sammut, Josianne Cutajar, Fleur Vella, Noel Cassar and Josef Caruana.

The Labour Party described its list as consisting of a “strong candidature that offers the electorate a varied choice. While candidates have different abilities all have the aim of putting the interests of Malta and its citizens first,” they said in a statement.

Next year’s elections could set the tone of Malta’s political discourse over the next half a decade, with agenda-driven candidates from Alternattiva Demokratika and Moviment Patrijotti Maltin throwing their hats in as well.
